Humayun Azad, an unconventional poet in Bengali literature In maximum cases the photograph I post in my facebook page I try to give a caption related to that photograph. Most of the time I take shelter to Rabindranath Tagore. Whatever I look for my caption, I get it in Tagore’s writing. Because there is nothing in his writing that does not touch any room of human psychology. Modern Bengali literature has been created through his hand. What the sense of art and symbolism created by him is still being followed and practiced even in present time. In the mean time stormy emerge of Kazi Nazrul Islam was totally different where he tried to blend different languages which was direct attack against the social conventional disorder and suppression. Though his sense of romanticism is touchier and heart breaking, we are much known of that poetry which is related to rebellion. In both cases he was able to create his own world coming out from Tagore’s border. Interestingly still now we are not able to come out from this two great artist. We are just reshuffling and recreating the symbols, colors, tune, perception and artistic sense of these two poets. But except these two poets another poet came into Bengali literature who did not follow their path and he is Jibonando Das whose poetry was called “cittrokolporupomoy” by Rabindranath Tagore. Mr. Das brought out those subjects in his poetry that existed in our society, nature and even in our mind very deeply and silently. But the way how the elements of nature are presented in his poetry is totally exceptional and not found in Bengali literature. Mr. Das presented these issues with soft hand. As we were not aware of these issues, we were failed to evaluate him in his life time. But he is the only poet who was able to bring out the beauty of nature and its relation to human being which was totally unnoticed by others. When most of the writers are busy to portray the outer beauty of nature then Jibonando portrayed the suffering of nature and beauty of this suffering has made his poetry much great. In this cases nature is the source of his sense of beauty. His greatness lies in the fact that he was able to merge sympathetically the sense of beauty and suffering of humanity in the nature. Most exceptional part of his poetry is that the way he used symbols is his own creation and he used this symbols to locate those beauty of nature that was hide in the unfold part of the time. That’s why some time we can’t realize his poetry. Actually he was much ahead of time. There is another poet of Bengali literature who exceeds all others and who is far ahead of time. He is Humayun Azad. Mr. Azad is such a writer who is totally unconventional and farsighted. Though his poetry deals with heterogeneous aspect of our society but most remarkable issue is his use of language more specifically his use of symbols in his writing. It is almost universal truth that except Jibonando Das most of the modern Bengali writers all time owe to two great persons Tagore and Nazrul. But Mr. Azad has broken down all the previous conventions and he has created a new form of language. Previously it is marked that Tagore encompassed all aspects of Bangalies thinking, Nazrul filled up the demand of time and Jibonando disclosed the unfold beauty of nature. But Mr. Azad has used that aspect of the society which is untouched by others and even they did not think of it which can be the part of literature, which can be used as symbol, simile, metaphor etc. Humayun azad is the only writer who has shown his mastery over those words which are neglected, those objects of the nature which are rejected, and those parts of the society which are avoided. When other writers can’t think these to use in literature, then Azad has used these very artistically and skillfully, when they consider these elements for negative implication, then Azad has used these positively. No doubt it has been possible for his mastery over language and thinking of post modernism in real sense. His ability to turn those neglected, rejected, unused and so called negative elements into positive and artistic notion makes him great. In this perspective we can say that Humayun Azad is much more ahead of time and true post modern writer in Bengali literature. As we are not that ahead of time, we misinterpret him. So, we will have to wait until we can understand that time. 30.03.2014(I hope to discuss on this issue in details in future)
