Hyungyul Kim, The latest information from English Composition I: Achieving Expertise by Duke University on Coursera. I hope you have been enjoying learning about yourself as a writer and about your chosen area of expertise. This week we close our Project 2 cycle and move ahead with Project 3. (Running short on time this week? Scroll down to the Flexible Time Guide below so you can customize your English Composition I experience and meet your time constraints.) Focus of the Week. This week’s video lectures discuss the meaning and uses of active and passive voice. There are two video lectures this week and a Special Topics video lecture on Issues of Language Use in Social Sciences. There is a new self-reflection exercise addressing your progress with Project 2. Optional Workshop I am delighted to announce a small-group workshop opportunity where participants can provide, receive, and model feedback on Project 3 drafts. The Project 3 Draft workshop will be held on Friday, December 5, 11:00 AM EDT (GMT -0400). Please consider volunteering to participate in a workshop. Note: Only posts made to the official thread pinned to the top of this forum will be considered; spots are limited for the workshop. The deadline for volunteering is Tuesday, December 2, 5:00 PM EDT (GMT -0400). Writing Assignments. Project 3 Draft Feedback: (due Monday, November 24 at 9:00 AM EDT (GMT -0400)). This week you are giving feedback to three of your peers on their Project 3 Draft: Case Study. To complete this assignment, go to the Writing Projects & Peer Feedback tab. Next go to the “Project 3 Draft: Case Study” assignment. Click on Evaluation Phase and respond to the guiding feedback questions for each peer. Note: Please dont forget the first question, which asks you, Is this a complete draft? Award your peer a “1” if the draft looks like a serious attempt at doing the assignment. The essay does not have to be perfect, but it should show an understanding of what a draft entails (see video 02_03-What is a Draft? for a description of a draft). I will post under Readings & Resources sample feedback for Project 3. If you were unable to make the official deadline for Project 3 Drafts, you can post your Project 3 Draft to the “Procrastinator’s Corner/Life is Too Busy Junction” and try to exchange feedback with a classmate through this forum. In that way, you can still get feedback on your project and revise it for the final version deadline due Monday, December 1 at 9:00 AM EDT (GMT -0400). Project 2 Self-Reflection: (due Monday, November 24 at 9:00 AM EDT (GMT -0400)). This self-reflection “quiz” (graded by credit/no credit) is an opportunity to think about your growth as a writer after completing Project 2. Be sure to have an electronic copy of your final Project 2 essay open on your computer while completing this “quiz”; you will be asked to copy text from it during the quiz. You may apply “Late Days” to this quiz if you cant make the deadline of Monday, November 24 at 9:00 AM EDT (GMT -0400). More information about “Late Days” is located under the Syllabus and Frequently Asked Questions tab. Reading. Return to your Project 2 Final and read any available feedback on your project. *****Flexible Time Guide***** Naturally, the more time one puts into a course, the more one can get out of it. However, I recognize that some weeks you may not have enough time to complete all of that weeks coursework. For that reason, each week I will provide a flexible time guide you can use in order to make the course better fit your available time. That way, instead of feeling that you may have to stop participating altogether, or deciding to delay course activities and then finding it has all added up to too much, you can instead continue to make forward progress with the course and thereby learn and benefit as a writer. If you have 1-2 hours this week to devote to the course, I recommend you ... provide feedback for Project 3, either through the official peer feedback or through Procrastinators Corner/Life is Too Busy Junction. If you have 3-4 hours this week to devote to the course, I recommend you ... do the above, plus complete the Project 2 Self-Reflection. If you have 5 or more hours this week to devote to the course, I recommend you ... take advantage of all of this weeks offerings! If you are new to the course or havent yet had the chance to participate as much as youd hope, please join in--you can jump in now and have plenty of opportunity to strengthen your writing. Good luck on your writing this week! Sincerely, Professor Comerhttps://class.coursera.org/composition-003
