I Respectfully Decline So I got a call from a friend today who plays with a well known, respected blues and roots rock artist, informing me that this artist is looking for a guitarist and lap steel player and would I be interested. It would be a good paying gig with a great band, a lot of travel, full time and with a fair amount of perks. The only problem is that after each show, the wife of this artist calls each band member to the back of the tour bus or hotel- depending on the logistics- and critiques your performance , ostensibly to keep the show running smoothly and everyone on their toes. Now, I have absolutely no problem working with women in the music industry and the fact is, most of the satisfying and rewarding professional experiences I have are initiated and nurtured by women; they tend to be more detail oriented and possess less ego. But, if you trust that I am competent enough to play in your band, is a nightly critique really necessary ? I find that a little weird, frankly. So I told him thanks so much for thinking of me but Im very happy working on my own as well as with Long Tall Deb because I know that bigger things are on the horizon for her and the band and thats where my heart and soul are. So, am I crazy or sensible? I feel, without question, I made the right decision . And no, I will not reveal who the artist is because, critique issue aside, I have a ton of respect for his music. Cheers !
