I advise a lot of my friends who own small businesses about websites and marketing all the time. The stumbling block to most peoples success is understanding SEO and modern marketing techniques. (Modern = the last six months) And if I end up doing a web site for someone most people do not invest any time whatsoever into marketing their web sites once they are live (ie- getting found on google).
