I already blew it yesterday, as the last 48 hours have been basically a nonstop rehearsal/recording session, so ANYWAY heres your #FriendRockFriday for this week... Perhaps you saw my posts about the Hushdrops show at Hideout last week. Well you should get to know them better, as I am just getting hip to them now and they seriously rule. FRIEND CONNECTION: My bro Jöe Camarillo of Jon Langford/Waco Brothers/NRBQ/etc/etc fame is on drums, and he continues to blow me away every time I see him. WHY THEY RULE: Im pretty sure you wont hear a single standard rock and roll chord progression on their most recent album (called Tomorrow, which by my understanding was recorded in mono?? unreal!). John San Juan is a wizard of far-out alternate tunings, which make for hitherto unknown voicings and mind-bending chord changes, and yet his melodies all work over them so seamlessly you get lost in the song rather than trying to analyze the nutzo harmonic structure. It also makes them one of the fullest-sounding trios Ive heard live. Add to that Joes devastatingly powerful-yet-crisp drumming and bold, crunchy 8-string bass from Jim Shapiro(drummer for Veruca Salt btw) and you end up with some incredibly compelling power pop thats sophisticated and heady but still really hits hard. FRIEND ROCK.
