I am back in the US after my 5 month assignment in Hanoi, Vietnam with CDC. I joined a team of CDC/Vietnam and Atlanta based staff that was designated to support the CDC Global Health Initiative (GHSI) focusing on three priority WHO International Health Regulations (IHR) development activities laboratory systems, emergency operations centers (EOCs), and real-time information systems. I focused on the EOC capacity development element of this initiative and worked with Vietnamese MOH in combining their considerable disease emergency response experiences into a centralized emergency response system. In 5 months the foundations were laid for an EOC system. This is just the beginning of a large development project for the Vietnamese MOH. In Atlanta and hope to continue this development process with the MOH and also use what has been learned in developing models for other EOC international development projects.
