I am dealing with bumblefoot, and I thought it might be useful to others to post what is being done. This is my first episode with it, and it is pretty awful lol. We saw our hens foot was quite swollen on saturday and, with no way to get her vet attention til monday, we took her into the house and put her in a dog crate with a towel. Started doing epsom salt foot soaks twice a day and took her to Animal Health Clinic to see their bird doctor on monday (Dr. Dill is awesome!!). When we got there, I assisted him by holding her on her side while he used a tweezers (basically) to remove the hard yellow core. There was A LOT in there. After that, he rinsed it with a sterile solution and packed the wound with a white ointment. Because we live so far away, he did not want to bandage her foot. She has a check up appointment next week. He gave us some of the sterile solution, the white ointment, and a cherry flavored antibiotic that she isnt crazy about lol. We let her run around the living room at a friends house and when we went to do her regimen we saw that her foot was very swollen again. This morning we decided to bandage her foot up the way we saw on this page (hobbyfarms/livestock-and-pets/how-to-treat-bumblefoot-in-chickens.aspx) to keep debris out and the ointment in. I will post a pic when we do that. We also ordered some neoprene chicken booties that hopefully will arrive soon. The vet told us recovery is 4-6 weeks, so we pretty much have a house chicken now :p
