I am over joyed at the way Mickey is settling in. He is learning fast. Unsurprisingly he is reactive to people and dogs when the approach on walks. I want to desensitize him to their presence by rewarding him for not barking while knowing they are there but with him under threshold. The problem I have is that he is unaware they are there until they are so close he is over threshold. I also think part of the problem is that they make him jump and he worries they going to stand on him so he barks to keep them back. I think having a word that means people approaching might help him not startle. When he does realize someone is there (eg noisy teenagers) I give him extra length in his lead and he does a big curve around them and no barking. Does anyone have any suggestion of how to teach the warning cue?
