I am responsible for keeping the SCADA network (which transmits data about how the water/sewer infrastructure is working) operational. We have a SCADA site that has had continual radio problems. Too many trees and houses blocking the signal. So it went down too often, especially when it rained. About a month ago I decided to have Verizon put a dedicated line in to replace the radio link (not very expensive, about $20/month; its just a point to point dry copper pair). I put a Cisco 1721 with a DSL card in at each end. Yes, used Cisco equipment, but the stuff never seems to die, and the price was surely right. Its been working for almost a month now. The other day I was thinking..man, what an inglorious end for a Cisco router. Thats pretty much it for those Cisco routers. They will spend the rest of their life sending data about sewage. In a previous life they may have connected an office to the internet, and a lot more people appreciated what they did. Did you ever think about all of the infrastructure that is required to bring you clean water and treat the sewage?
