I am unsure if this should be posted here, but I have a project/question that I am interested in learning more of and I am calling upon the most amazing people I know for help, the silent heralds. If this topic is not fitting please feel free to remove this post. I am currently taking my masters courses for Reading Literacy. It was here that my husband and I had a catch your breath moment when we were discussing how a hearing impaired (please pardon if that is an incorrect terminology) would first begin the steps of reading. I know as a Kindergarten teacher we spend a lot of time going over the sounds of singular letters, and how they make more complicated sounds when paired with other letters. This is one of the basic building blocks for reading. My question is to each of you (I do not come from a hearing impaired background) how is this approached for someone is hearing impaired? Also what books would you suggest that are important building blocks for reading literacy for the hearing impaired? I am going to do this for a major project and it is of intense interest to me. I want to do this project with accuracy. I think there is enough miss-information or plain ignorance on a lot of the hearing community. If you have any insights please reply, or if you rather private message me with your thoughts. I will even give you my email if you want to have lengthy discussions. Again, if I made any huge errors in terminology or you feel that as someone who comes from a full hearing background could not possibly understand, give me a moment and enlighten me. I think this is an area that is often miss-understood or ignored and I think it’s something every teacher should consider learning more on. (Please remove post if it is at all offensive or to broad a topic)
