I arrived at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. It isn’t too far - TopicsExpress

I arrived at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. It isn’t too far over the line from St. Louis. I came through St. Louis in rush hour traffic but it was not that bad. I arrived at Scott around 6PM. The trip was 414 miles from Fort Riley in Kansas. It was lots of open interstate running. Most of the time, I locked cruise on to 75 or 80. That is 5 mph over the speed limit that you are allowed the vast majority of the time. I have had cops pass me or sitting alongside the road with their radar/laser on and not move. I have a detector that senses both radar and laser - so far, so good. All through Kansas I saw many acres of corn and it looked like it was in pretty good shape. Everything’s corny in Kansas right? I did not see any dying from lack of water. There is lots of standing water from rain but I did not run into any of it. Temps have been in the 90s since I got out of the desert (I cannot for the life of me keep desert and dessert straight) I am talking about those sand filled places. I know one of you will correct me again and I will forget again. See Miss Spence, (my English teacher) I have not changed. I know she is up there rolling her eyes and shaking her head. I did make her earn her keep those years ago in high school. I stopped at my favorite place for lunch – Cracker barrel. I should say brunch (11Am). They had a new item, grilled salmon patties (2) with 2 veggies. It is served with a chipotle sauce that is very good as long as you didn’t use too much. It is strong. Mashed potatoes and green beans (Yes mom I ate all my veggies) with a drink came to $10 and some change. For supper, I stopped at Subway and bought a cheese steak foot long with raw peppers and onions. No sauce. It too went down fast. I am trying not to eat too much so I won’t have to put the seat back more. No comments are necessary. I have a full suite here at Scott AFB. It consists of a sitting room and a bedroom with the kitchenette and bath in between. 2 TV sets with all the dishes etc. to cook if I want. The small Refer is “stocked” beer, juice, water soda and those little bottles of wine and liquor you get on the airlines. No mom, I will not drink and drive. I am not driving tonight so guess what??? But it helps me sleep mom. Internet connect here is wifi but for some reason I cannot get on. I think my plug in thingy isn’t working right. I’ll have to take it to AT&T when I get to Rochester. Hopefully my next stop before reaching Rochester will have Lan hookup. I feel so blind without access. My entire banking and the rest of my life is on line. Too, I cannot send my “ON THE ROAD AGAIN” or email. It is funny how you get addicted to this, the GPS, detector and so on. Add to this the hearing aids, pace maker, and B Pap for sleep Apnea. I won’t know what to do if they get rid of batteries or have an electrical interruption. The golden years - Yeah right. CORRECTION HERE!!! I got up this morning ( Saturday) and all is well. I made connection and am sending this out. My plug in thingy, from AT&T, must be union. I had to put “from AT&T” in. My little brother Yoseph has a warped mind. I have to get there and feed him animal crackers and he will be OK……. It must be the winter weather that effects him and the rest of the family. I am the only sane one in the bunch...Well closer to sane than they are.... Tomorrow is my last night on the road. I stop at another Air Force Base – Wright-Patterson in Ohio. It is a very interesting place. It is the graveyard for all old military aircraft as far back as WWII - miles and miles of each type in their own area. If they could only talk, I would love to walk amongst them and listen to their life stories. It would be so interesting. I may even have worked on some of them. When I go to Marine Corps and Navy bases, those I worked on are on pedestals at the main entrances. I think I am dating myself. No, I do not go as far back as winding the rubber bands and WWI Bi-planes. The last time I stayed there, in my drive to the transit or temporary lodging, I passed a strange looking plane. It looked familiar but I could not place it. I turned around and took another look. Would you believe a Russian MIG? It is one of their later versions and huge. I believe it is bigger than the Navy F-14. I will see what it is this time and let you know. More later Tom/Walter
