I attempted suicide in 2003. In the years since, Ive continuously fought against the black terror of insanity while relying heavily on this still-primitive mental health medicine and trying not to be too much trouble for those around me. Since suicide/depression is the hot topic du jour, I needed to say the following: Awareness will not eradicate mental illness in the same way that it will not eradicate AIDS. While well-intended, reposting a suicide hotline number only shows that you care enough to slough off responsibility of the sick to someone else; thats exactly what perpetuates hopelessness in the mentally ill in the first place. Were currently living in the Dark Ages of psychiatric medicine, and taboos abound that prevent us from reaching out to people we actually know. It. Is. Damned. Scary. So Im going to do this differently, because this is what I wish anyone had offered me when I needed it. IF YOURE SUICIDAL/DEPRESSED AND DONT WANT TO TALK TO A COMPLETE STRANGER WITH A SCRIPTED AGENDA, CALL ME. Im at 843.855.0832. Im not a perfect person, but I believe in pulling through hell, and Ill give you a nonjudgmental place to dump your load without any pandering blather or clichéd guilt-trips about why you shouldnt feel the way you do. Promise. If this doesnt apply to you, consider donating your money to a cause that is working to protect those with mental illness.
