I cant help but grin when I see all these people doing the cold water challenge and posting videos on FB. Back in 77, the first time I went to the hills for Gary and Didi Fales, we didnt see any thrill when it finally came time to take a trip to the Thorofare River and just about have to hold a gun on each other to take a bath. I HATE cold water. LOL Six of us guys butt naked on the bank of the river and I watched every one of them jump in this one hole just deep enough to bend your knees and get your head wet, soap up, go back under to rinse off and get out and grab a towel. One guy went in, went under to get his head wet and when he came back up, he had a sudden nose bleed. The shock of the cold water did it I guess. All the guys had bathed, dried off, dressed and half way back to camp and Im still standing there butt naked freezing and trying to convince myself I had to take a bath. One way you can tell its time to bathe and change clothes when up in the hills is when you take your jeans off and they stand up by themselves, yep, time to clean up I suppose. After a little motivational talk and a whole lot of cussing, I hit the water. I can remember that experience to this day and am reminded of ole Guss comment from Lonesome Dove. Damn Near Shriveled My Bean. LOL. Thank God, we didnt know what a video was back then. On second thought, might be fun to see after all these years. Bet that old Thorofare River is just as cold today as it was back 37 years ago. Just one of many fond memories I have of the days of my youth up in the hills of Wy. Quite a few old friends that I traveled the trails with back then have gone under and I am thankful for everyone of them that I pursued the majestic Wapiti with.
