I did promise to share my Energy switching trauma, so sit back, - TopicsExpress

I did promise to share my Energy switching trauma, so sit back, relax and be warned! (This is part one of two!) My current supplier is sort of Scottish Power and has been since I swapped from NPower a few years ago, who in turn had replaced British Gas. Each year I would check the energy price comparison sites and usually Scottish Power would be the cheapest..... that is until November 2013. In November 2013 my price check provided a quote from a new Energy Supplier - OVO Energy - that would mean paying £10 less each month. Not much I know but a saving of £120 a year. So I clicked through and signed up to switch to OVO. A few days later I received in the post conformation of the deal and was surprised to find that the price they wanted to charge me was £24 more than I was paying.... thats £288 more each year. Thinking this was probably an error I called OVO who told me the price was right even though £408 a year more than quoted. Heres the trick.... on the comparison site they base the price on the usage you enter into the comparator site - in my case my actual use for Gas and Electric in the past 12 months. When they issue the contract they inflate the usage you have entered by 20% or 25% so that the account will always be in a positive balance (on which uniquely OVO). I explained to OVO that my objective was to spend less on Energy and not more and that therefore it seemed pointless to switch after all. If I had been quoted honestly in the first place they would not have come in as the cheapest. So OVO cancelled the switch there and then over the phone. This would be confirmed in writing in the coming days, which it was. To play it safe I also rang Scottish Power to advise them also that the switch had been cancelled. They advised me this would not be a problem and I could expect the supply to be switched back in 6 to 8 weeks. So that all seems quite easy.... but beware of what you are quoted and what your contract says. Now by rights that should have been an end to it.... but as November 2014 approaches ... the saga goes on and on and on..... More later folks ......
