I dont do this often but: In today’s world we are often faced with the issue of race. The unfortunate events of Ferguson, MO are in the forefront of the news. I’ve read more than one comment from facebook users that seem to feel the need to reference the president’s ethnicity in discussing a political situation that has nothing to do with his or the posters race. So be it. I’m not writing to change the world or your opinion. Racism, perceived or real is still an issue. I’m not playing the race card, I’m telling you what just happened and you can come to your own conclusion. I was walking out of the bank, not in 1964 but at 10:10 today, and I had to walk beside the passenger side of the car parked beside my car. In the passenger seat of this car was an elderly white woman. She was wearing a pair of those very dark sunglasses on a rainy day so I’ll make the leap that her sight was impaired. But, her sight was not impaired enough that she didn’t see me. I know because she locked her door. Sitting in a car in full view of people in the bank, and others in the parking lot, at 10 a.m., she locks the door. I know it could be argued that she is elderly and this probably increases her anxiety, but if that was the case why was the door ever unlocked? I’m not mad, I’m not distraught and I’m not surprised. This is not the first time it’s happened to me. Now, on the other side of this coin are the wonderful relationships I have with so many people of all races, ages and genders. If I needed any proof of the kindness, humanity and tolerance of humankind I need only remember the turnout last night at Bosler Library for my show there. The kindness and, dare I say love was palpable. People I hadn’t seen in years were there and I was reminded of the friends and associates that I’ve been blessed to enjoy over the years. So lock your door, figuratively or literally if you feel you need protection. Just try to be aware that it’s tough for anything, good or bad, to get in if it’s locked. Sorry for the rant.
