I dont like being pressured into things, John Moody, but Ill bite. Top ten books in no particular order. I am not claiming these to be the 10 best books, but the ones that had a particular effect on me at the time of reading. 1. Institutes of the Christian Religion - John Calvin It is a classic for a reason. To think that he made all of the connections he did without the resources we now have is mind-blowing. 2. Cost of Discipleship- Dietrich Bonhoeffer Real grace vs. cheap grace. 3. Christianity and Liberalism - Gresham Machen Still holds up strong 80 years later as a critique on the effects of modern thinking on Scripture and the church. 4. Holiness of God - RC Sproul Be overwhelmed by God 5. Knowing God - JI Packer A great place to start on developing a healthy fear of The Lord. Mom gave it to me in middle school and told me to read it over and over again for the rest of my life. I took her advice. 6. Preaching and Preachers - Martin Lloyd-jones Its fun to read the doctors thoughts on everything for how to prepare, deliver, and follow up on your preaching. Dont agree with it all, but even the stuff I dont demands a response. 7. Escape from Reason/the God who is There/He is there and He is not Silent - Francis Schaeffer Cheated a bit because this is a trilogy, but they are all short, so...Schaeffer laid the groundwork for modern apologists like the Plantingas and Wolterstorff in their defense of the faith against the shifting thoughts of culture. 8. Reason for God - Tim Keller Great accessible book answering the biggest questions that are used to challenge Christianity. I have given a lot of copies of this away. 9. A Place of our Own - Michael Pollan A great book that helps to describe the importance of place and ability of the built environment to aid or destroy our understanding of humanness. 10. Citizenship Papers -Wendell Berry It is hard to pick a single work by Berry as his nonfiction work is in essay form and his books are just collections of essays. There are essays of his that are my favorite that are not here, but I think this is the best collection to give a full idea of what it means to be responsible human beings in the place we live.
