I dont normally comment on terrorist activity, but todays events in Lurgan involved my old primary school. Carrick taught me to realise, that if you have a justifiable point of view, then your words and power of persuasion should be enough to demonstrate to others that your path is the right path. It also taught me, that if your own opinion involves having to bully, or harass, or even kill others in order to achieve your goals, then there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with your goals. I personally believe that Irish Unity as a political ideology, is a justifiable ideology to hold dear, in the same way as the political ideology to maintain the Union, is also justifiable to hold dear. What I dont believe, is that any ideology which involves forcing your opponents to believe in it through fear of force, or death or destruction, is justifiable. Our recent history suggests to me that I am not alone in that thinking. Their campaign of terrorism hasnt been successful in almost 100 years. What makes them think that putting the lives of innocent children at risk, or the elderly lying in a hospital bed, or residents put out of their homes, is going to convince me, or anybody, that their path is the right path?? Its not to say that they havent been told this before, but the message doesnt seem to be getting through. Perhaps we, as a society need to realise that we are never going to convince them otherwise, and that we ALL should do more to help the authorities to catch and convict those responsible. We also need our government, to introduce legislation that ensures that when they are caught, and incarcerated, that they are not released until such times as they realise the error of their ways. It seems to me that nothing else has worked with these people. When will they ever learn?
