I drove through Ferguson around noon today. North New Florissant - TopicsExpress

I drove through Ferguson around noon today. North New Florissant Road was closed between Church Street and Paul Ave, diverting the traffic through the neighborhood. People were walking toward the police station from both directions. Nearly all of the businesses including nearly all of the restaraunts, Ferguson Library, Shop-n-Save and Walgreens were closed (reminded me of my neighborhood the day after the tornado ripped through it). I went to Dollar Tree and they were in the midst of closing. While I was in Dollar Tree a parade of cars was traveling north on N. Flor. Road from Church St. laying on their horns with folks waiving out of the windows. It seems the city was not, in any way, discouraging a peace filled gathering in the street. But I wonder how much they were listening to the protesters? My heart breaks for this community because FERGUSON IS A COMMUNITY. In fact, people are constantly working together to improve the community. Constantly. This is such a major tragedy all around. And the opportunistic idiots who did the rioting and looting were largely from the surrounding areas, NOT Ferguson. But regarding the tragic shooting of the young man, Mike Brown, this issue of race in the metro St. Louis area, as well as the entire state of Missouri (look up Little Dixie Highway, no joke) has been bubbling and bubbling, ready to boil over. Hopefully this will iginite a conversation and all of the folks who claim to be involved with such socio-economic issues will put their territorialism aside and actually get together to begin, I say begin, a real conversation about race.
