I feel I owe an explantion to a few people who have supported me and offered help. They did not understand completely how things really work in Romania. I’ll post this message trying to reach two issues of common interest regarding dogs in public shelters: 1. Among us, there are some “animal lovers” who deal in tracking dogs which are photographed and posted on Facebook for adoption. They manage to obtain foreign sponsorship deals for dogs for which I am responsible (being the initial Romanian contact). They go to the shelters and ask for the dogs before I manage to get there. If somehow the dog has been reserved by me, they go enough times to know the right person to bribe in order to take the dog out. The person who booked the dog on Facebook is told that the dog was reclaimed by its previous owner. This is what I am told as well, by the staff of the shelter. That also happened yesterday, when from a list of 29 dogs, I only received 24 dogs from Mihailesti shelter. In Pallady shelter, I booked 13 dogs and received only 5. In Bragadiru shelter, a few days ago, I took photos of about 20 dogs which magically disappeared right after I posted them on Facebook, in the next two days (except the ones I already moved). It would seem like a good thing, if we think that those dogs were rescued and have been found by their “previous owners”. But nobody really cares that this thing is becoming a serious business for frauds, Romanian “contacts” tricking various foreign persons to pay for the same dog, most often a dog they see it gathers many likes on Facebook and which is wanted by almost everybody. Those people are also asking overpriced fees from multiple sponsors. While the dog EVENTUALY goes to some sponsor (usually the one who pays more), the other sponsors are being told the same story, that “the previous owner reclaimed the dog in the process of rescuing”. These so called “contacts” offer to provide rescue for another dog, due to the amount already paid by the sponsors, launching a pyramid-game scheme in which foreigners are trapped, investing money and feelings. 2. Another big issue is with many foreign people who want to sponsor or adopt a dog from Romanian shelters. They address frantically to the Romanian GENUINE contacts they see on Facebook just up to the moment the dog is taken out from the shelter by a rescuer. After that, the offer for sponsorship or adoption disappears, the rescuer getting stuck with a dog nobody wants. This thing really slows (and even stops) the process of rescuing other dogs from the shelter, as the rescuer has limited space and limited reserve funds. The rescuer can’t afford to permanently take in care an unwanted dog. People who abandon dogs at the rescuer are no better than people who abandon dogs on the streets. More info: Up until yesterday I booked and took out of the shelter all the dogs that I photographed in the last two weeks. They are 64 dogs, as following: - Paws2Rescue took 27 of them. - For another 4, there are sponsors who pay foster 35 euro per month. - For the remaining 33 I need help. Why do I need help? They are fed and cared for at this point, but as soon as they leave, the sooner I will have room for others. Therefore, please do leave a comment if you can sponsor the departure preparations of one of the puppies or if you can foster for a puppy from the shelter. If we don’t do this job as a team, constantly and with physical involvement, just with good intentions we won’t help the dogs. Very important! - Ill no longer go to a shelter to rescue dogs photographed by someone else. If you want to save dogs through me, you will help the dogs booked by me. I’m very well organised, I know how many, where and why I photographed my dogs. I also know the maximum number of dogs that I can afford and if I have space for them. - I will not rescue from a shelter more than 5 dogs at a time, this way they will be easier to identify and to follow. - I have nothing in addition to any of you, please don’t ask me to do all sorts of things just because there is no one else to do it. I can’t manage the extra workload and the unlimited number of posts with these requests, please believe me and try to understand. Thank you very much!
