I finally mailed our letter to the UN Human Rights Commission. The finalized version follows: January 15, 2015 Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Palais des Nations CH-1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland [email protected] Dear Advocates Of Human Rights, Please take this letter seriously. We are requesting a U.N. investigation into the practice of jury duty in the United States. State and Federal governments in the United States force innocent people completely against their will, sometimes for weeks or even months on end, to serve as unpaid jurors. This is both tyranny and slavery, against both of which the United Nations is supposed to be dedicated. The United States is jailing innocent people, including single parents and other citizens with dependents at home, and fining destitute workers up to their entire life savings, just for not submitting to, or even just for showing up late to, this involuntary servitude. The United States forces poor workers to lose their wages from their real jobs to work as unpaid juror-slaves for nonworking judicial officials who earn salaries around a quarter million dollars per year, judicial officials who then routinely abuse the innocent jurors with their absolute and arbitrary power by jailing or fining them ($1000.00!) for offenses as trivial as smiling, yawning, or texting while in court. In the United States, defendants and even convicted criminals have rights, but jurors have no rights whatsoever. Jury duty not only oppresses jurors but also perverts justice by allowing incompetent amateurs to decide the fates of accused persons, and if you investigate, you will find in the United States overwhelming evidence of at least 10% false guilty verdicts, not even including false innocent verdicts, and innocent people even being executed at the rate of about one every four or five years. Please come to our country to see for yourselves, and then please help us to end the tyranny, slavery, and injustice of jury duty. We have contacted seventy-five official agencies within the United States about this issue, but to no avail. Officials here simply ignore us. We need help from an external organization such as yours, one that really does believe in freedom and does not just use the empty word the way the United States does. We need your help, because we are powerless to help ourselves, for as long as our own government retains a two-party only system in which both parties resist jury duty reform, and as long as our judges are empowered to single-handedly reject measures voted into law by millions of our own citizens, then our own government will not listen to us—but they may listen to you. There are millions of citizens here who will testify against jury duty if you give them the chance. Please champion the basic human rights of impressed jurors around the world, and encourage all nations toward a part-time professional jury system, for if paid jurors serve only part-time, that is, receive most of their income from some other, non-governmental source, then they can still be considered as peers to defendants. Please save Americas poor and Americas families from the ravages of forced and unpaid jury service, and expose the hypocrisy of the United States pretending to defend against tyranny and slavery in other countries while actually practicing the tyranny and slavery of jury duty in her own country.
