I find bio writing the most intricate form of writing. It forces me to prioritize what’s most important about my life, and make liberal use of my fiction license. What I need to say and what my ego wants to say are often dissimilar things. It’s an intimidating task to distill my entire life down into several paragraphs that are lucid, succinct, and prompts someone besides me to truly care. I presume with every word in my bio that fewer and fewer people will continue reading. It’s a sobering assumption because it’s accurate. Only my mother is awed by the lengthy succession of middling endeavors I trot out. I am guilty of the pathetic inclination conceived by Twitter, where bios of people depict themselves by copious sundry traits. This makes us look like someone who sucks at everything. It’s fine to be a Jack of All Trades, but to insist on telling everyone we are Jack of All Trades mostly makes us Jack’s of Mediocre.
