I find this article extremely condescending and disrespectful to that Chelsea 2012 team. To call their victory all down to blind wild luck is nothing short of.... well, blind wild hyperbole. Ok, so Messi hitting the crossbar for his penalty can be considered lucky, but everyone misses penalties.. ESPECIALLY when there is THAT much more pressure on you in the big games. If anything the chances of scoring a pen go down when the stakes are higher, its called pressure. Then to say Bayern/Barca lost ala: The only reason they did not(win) was the bad luck to badly finish at those moments. Horses**t. Since when is it blind luck that a team cant take there chances? A team defending for their lives and putting their bodies on the line to get the block in for a shot is NOT luck. That is called defending of the highest order! Chelsea may have been totally pulverised in the stats for possession and shots. But how many were blocked? how many were under series defensive pressure and closed down to an acute angle? And those that were on target, an inspired keeper kept them out. That sir is not wild blind luck, that is a team preventing a team from scoring through heart and defensive resoluteness. Alexis Sanchez fist leg lob which hit the bar is the ONLY chance that I remember being guilt edged and where they should of scored. Of course it was lucky that they didnt take at least ONE of their numerous chances created. But that is equally down to the defensive pressure rather than ALL pure luck Bayern had numerous chances in the final, yes. But Chelsea reduced them to half chances and shots that always had bodies in the way. There was not one chance id say that was guilt edged and 9/10 times would of been a goal. Then to call Drogbas goal a set piece hit and hope, is absurd. If anything Mullers goal was the luckiest of all the goals considered. So yes, they rode their luck considering the chances missed by Bayern/Barca. But Chelsea STILL had to do something to win! Drogba scored a magnificent team couter-attacking first leg goal against Barca. They then came from BEHIND and scored TWICE with TEN men in the CAMP NOU! Then kept their nerve and beat a German side on penalties in Germany. FFS how is all of that blind pure luck? Certainly there is an element involved but to dismiss Chelseas achievements that year as purely Barca/Bayerns failings is quite absurd and frankly disrespectful. As for the articles thinly-veiled dig at Chelsea, attempting to provide UTD with some sort of fighting chance, sure they can. I for one will be rooting for UTD to get a result. But this UTD side cannot remotely compare to the defensive nous of the chelsea12 side. That being said, football is a crazy game and Ive seen stranger things happen.
