I got a call from a group associated with Newt Gingrich asking for a $100 contribution to secure a conservative Republican senate majority. I could have just hung up, of course, but instead I decided to have a little fun with it. Yeah, I know, Buddhists reading this might be saying think of your karma, Greg! If you keep this up youll be reincarnated as a dung beetle or telemarketer. Sometimes life is risk. Anyway, I decided to see just how long I could keep the woman on the phone. I set myself two rules at the start -- dont insult the woman manning the phone bank and dont lie. When she asked if Im a conservative Republican I replied Im not registered with any party -- nothing but truth there, as my state doesnt have party registration. I told her that I wouldnt buy a pig in a poke, that I wouldnt give money to anyone without being told what I was buying. The goal is to elect a conservative Republican senate, she told me. Thats not a goal, thats a means to a goal, I replied. Policies are ends, what policies does her group favor? I got some standard generalities at that point: eliminate the deficit, cut taxes, prevent defense cuts. I asked how she proposed to reconcile those apparently contradictory goals, and she told me she wasnt privy to that information. I talked a bit about internal divisions between libertarians and social conservatives in the GOP and asked her some more policy questions, and eventually she replied I plead stupidity. I shit you not. Thats a direct quote. Not ignorance. Stupidity. I kept the conversation going a bit longer after that, but well, lets face it -- after that line anything else is anticlimactic.
