I got a message today morning in my page. It read I am a writer, a very good one. Did my courses in writing and have been working with an industry that facilitates my passion, writing. I am writing my book now, my first book but I am scared to bring it out. what if it doesnt sell? No offense, you have made publishing industry look like a lame mockery when a book as such as yours hit bestseller chart.I admire you for what you have done with such limited resources but dislike you for taking away my hope in an industry which once I believed was accessible only to good writers. I smiled reading it. I hear this often from my friends too. Lately a good friend of mine, a great writer asked me how did your page get so popular? It was a very genuine question. She writes better than me, posts more frequently but yet my page was more popular. My reply to her was It is because my stories are more or less like fourth standard moral science stories. Probably people connect to it faster. It is true. There is another friend who is again a great writer and whom I approve of. She thinks I am egoistic, which is actually true. When I told her that I have an offer from someone to write a book on them and was considering it, she told me, It is not just because of the writing, it is also because you market well. True, I do sell well. Frankly I made more money to my publishers in 6 months than a blockbuster movie in Malayalam would give its producer. I told her she should bring out her book, not due to genuine want to see her become an author but I want her to know what it takes to sell our books in the Indian market where almost 6000+ book releases every year. True, my English is pedestrian. There will be a lot of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes when I write. That is why we have editors. Which means it is an issue that can be sorted out in the publishing industry. The issue that cant be sorted out easily is making a stranger pick up the book when they see it at the store, making them buy the book, making them read it and making them tell a good review about it. That my friend, will happen only when the book can talk itself. When the book can connect with the reader. Your proficiency in English language or the sophisticated words you use will not make your books sell. A reader wouldnt want to sit with a dictionary to read a book. Now, as for the question, why my book sells. It is two. One, I write even the most complex emotions in very simple language. Reason, I dont know how to write it better. So my biggest disability is my greatest ability. Second reason, I dont give up. I am not saying it as a punch dialogue. I literally dont give up until I get what I want. So when I am ought to sell, there is no other way than buying it from me. Now for a consolation, I can say that your books are like Kamal Hassans movie made for people with Class and mine are like Rajnikants made for the mass. But truly, I would be lying if I say that. Your book doesnt exist, you only have a manuscript. When you truly have a printed book, and when it hits the market let me know, I will getup dress up and show up for the competition and would probably listen to your advices. Until then my imperfect book is better than your perfect manuscript. Now you may find a thousand errors in this write up, but I am glad you read it till this line. That is exactly what I do, inspite of my imperfection I keep them glued to the writing.
