I had a rather telling exchange with one of the regular employees - TopicsExpress

I had a rather telling exchange with one of the regular employees today in the Mens Wearhouse I am helping to remodel. The employee is a first generation immigrant from Asia, judging by her physical appearance and accent, and a seamstress by trade. She works in the back of the store all day making alterations to clothing her low hourly wage no doubt could never afford her. I was instructed to change out all the old lamps in the store (bulb for you non-electricians), despite the fact that the old ones were still functional. The old ones would be thrown in the dumpster. When I asked my journeyman why, he said the new bulbs were slightly brighter and were thought to encourage a positive mood and a looser pocketbook, or something like that. Anyway, they are paying us to do it and that is all that matters. This bothered me, especially when I noticed that the old ones were eco-friendly and the new ones were the full mercury type that were supposed to be disposed of properly. I came at last to the sewing workshop in the back of the store, where the seamstress immediately informed me that their bulbs were still good and I was not needed. I explained the reasons behind the switch and that I had to do it. She made a face like she had just eaten something foul, and said so wasteful! I privately agreed. To workers like her and myself, such an act is wasteful and imprudent, almost to the point of obscenity. We are used to scraping by, and not having the money to fix things that are not broken. We do not have the choice of such frivolous acts, because our share of the fruits of our productivity are not ours to spend. I reflected on this as I changed out their lamps and then left for another part of the store to do it again. About twenty minutes went by, and the seamstress stuck her head around the corner. Young lady? I asked Patty, the other seamstress, and we both have lights in our kitchens that fit those bulbs. Can we have one of those boxes of them? Certainly you can maam. I am happy to see them save you a few dollars and not go to waste.
