I had seen many times Sangh supporters attempt to appropriate the legacy of Patel and their tremendous admiration for his role in unification of Indian states. Though I have my doubts on his much glorified and hyped role but what surprises me most is the role played by Hindu Mahasabha & RSS and their role towards princely states.Savarakar and Moonje clearly opposed all kinds of reforms in princely states and stood loyal to Kings and monarchs.Where ever Kings tried to bring in any reforms, Hindu Mahasabha clearly opposed them as in the case of Gaekwads of Baroda and even gone to the extent of asking Britishers to remove Gaekwads and occupy the state. But otherwise where ever kings stuck to their religious line Hindu Mahasabha clearly supported them. One should clearly see the support that Hindu Mahasabha offered to Diwan of Travancores who had gone to extent of declaring independence. Savarakar in 1939 Hindu Masabhas session clearly stated his no-interference policy in princely states(which ofcourse is also Gandhis policy till 1940).Even after 26 innocent citizens massacred by Mysore rulers for saluting tri-clour flag and for rising nationalistic slogans ,Savarkar clearly backed Rulers of Mysore and offered them unconditional support.Moonje even opposed introduction of Democracy(which he termed as a foreign idea) in princely states and offered them their unconditional support. How come people who stood with Kings and feudal elements against wishes of people can today claim to be the champions of Nationalism?
