I have a publicity photo signed by all four Beatles – or do I? I came by this item by accident, amongst some papers and stuff that came my way. I’ve had it for years, never able to establish who it might have “belonged” to, but more importantly whether it really is what it might seem to be. The autographs are different, but written with the same blue pen, each over the appropriate Beatle. My best guess is that someone has copied the four signitures. I’ve never bothered to verify it in any way. If I established it was real I might think about framing it. Might. Especially since it’s not really mine. Anyway, I have signatures I value much more, when artists have signed their records when I’ve interview them. They needn’t be from really famous people for me to treasure them . I value those signatures because they represent a personal connection with those artists. One that I value most just reads “Hi Ed”. No name. I know it’s real and that’s what matters to me, who it was, and that we shared that moment together. If I wanted to sell it I couldn’t. I wouldn’t want to sell it. I’ve never understood that memorabilia thing. Memories are personal, not transferable. I was prompted to write about this by Bill Wyman’s revelation that he and Jagger and Richards had learned each other’s signatures and would sign on others’ behalf to save time. Everyone who imagined they might have a significant piece of Rolling Stones memorabilia is suddenly left in doubt. Is Bill telling the truth or playing a spoiler role since the Stones have cast him out of their 50th anniversary celebrations? By the way, something I’ve learned along the way is that some artists have TWO distinct signatures, one for public consumption, one for the legalities the rest of us use signatures for.
