I have been deeply concerned by the recent shooting death of Ezell Ford in South Los Angeles. My heart goes out to Mr. Ford’s family for their wrenching loss. I understand why this case has caused so much anguish for many of my constituents, and I support a full and timely accounting of the facts of this tragedy. I also support the continued right to peacefully and legally assemble and speak out about this incident. As the L.A. Police Department continues their investigation of this case, I urge the Department to release the facts of this case as soon as possible. Their investigation should be comprehensive and fair, and I hope all sides will withhold judgment until all witnesses have reported what they saw and all of the facts have come in. In recent days, we have all seen the images of protests, arrests, and violence in Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting death of Michael Brown. I offer my heartfelt condolences to Mr. Brown’s family as well. I hope that everybody in South L.A. and Ferguson will work together to keep the peace and to bring these cases to fair and just resolutions.
