I have been invited to participate on a panel discussion of the Flint Charter questions on the November ballot. Here is what I plan to say. Your thoughts are asked for. I challenge you if you live in this community to be part of the work for positive change in the governance of Flint Mi. Change that must begin with a political culture that demands excellence in local government. But how ? We have a problem ! You are the problem that will stop positive change in Flint. Yes you ! Look around you most of those Flint resident who are here both care and will not remove there selves from the sideline and join this process of change. With out a critical mass of Flint residents who care and will act change will not happen. We are here to talk about change through charter ballot questions. Those are just meaningless words . There will be no change unless 1.we have people to make change happen.2.we have a critical mass of Flint citizens who care and will engage in the process.3. We have you. The group that brought you these charter questions care. The larger group that brought a new master plan care. To those that participated in the talking of those groups now is the time for you to continue through political action to change the charter and make the master plan priorities the new Flint. For those of you here not of those groups who live in Flint now is the time to act. I suggest a yes vote for charter revision that will cause the election of a Flint Charter Commission. Vote no on the amendments let the commission decide. Run for Charter Commission yourself or back other good people to run for these positions . I will gladly take questions about the current charter and my view of the ombudsman office. Thank you Terry Bankert Mlive article announcing the event follows. mlive/news/flint/index.ssf/2014/09/proposed_flint_charter_amendme.html State Rep. Woodrow Stanley, D-Flint, has also scheduled a community town hall to discuss the amendments from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Road, in Flint Township. Stanley is set to lead discussion on the Blue Ribbons Committees charter amendment recommendations, which include amending the number of mayoral appointments, budget best practices, as well as eliminating the ombudsman and civil service commission. Please attend and share your opinion. ==== I was questioned by a Face Book Friend Im not sure your piece says what you intend it to say. It in you say that those who are at the meeting will not participate in the change. Is that what you really intended to say? Or are you really wanting to say that those who are NOT at the mtg. will not participate in the change? I think those in attendance ARE more likely to be participants in the change and your statement will at best seem confusing and at worst will offend. Is that your intention? I answered ....YES . Those in attendance have a significantly greater probability of participating in change than those not present . But most present will not engage in the political process because it is messy, rude, hostile, do not know how, or would rather talk than act. Running for the charter commission is a brave act for those who have never done it. Those of us with the thick skins will run, not me but I would not fear it. Mine is a challenge for those saints,.... [the very people who could turn flint around,].... in the room to enter the political waters. If they do not they then are the problem. We need new people in leadership. That is what I ment.
