I have been nominated twice to do the ALS ice bucket challenge. But I refuse for two reasons. 1) I dont follow the crowd. I dont do things just because everyone else does. The purpose for the ice bucket challenge is to raise awareness. Congratulations! Goal met! Dumping water on my head wont do any good at this point. 2) This is the important one. The leading research team again ALS, ALSA, uses stem cell, as their website says, that are derived from fertilized embryos less than a week old. They also mention that they are able to isolate and propagate human embryonic stem cells in culture. These statements, and therefore research, go against my moral beliefs.
