I have been overwhelmed by the thoughts and emotions that come along each day. Every time I sit down to write another post about my dear Makenzie I can hardly contain my emotions. It was amazing to see my thought and feelings appear on the computer when I was typing in her ICU room. Listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at 1:00am in your daughters ICU room is a spiritual experience that I never imagined I would have. She is such a valiant Spirit and I know that angels are attending to her daily. Makenzie has picked up a VAP, which stands for a ventilator-associated pneumonia. They can occur in ill or injured patients after spending a few days in an ICU. I think I mentioned it a day or two ago. Well, now that we are dealing with an infection the doctors feel that getting her extubated might be a little tougher. She is a patient that they fell CAN NOT fail extubation. This means that after removing her breathing tube she would require re-intubation. Therefore, the doctors are talking about doing a tracheostomy tomorrow or Saturday. This means that they will get the tube out of her mouth and place it into the trachea on her neck. With a tracheostomy it is easier for nurses to control/contain secretions and gives more options for extubation as patients begin to wake up. This is not viewed as a failure by me--just a needed step in caring for her as she wakes up. The other issue we are dealing with is that Makenzie continues to experience some neurologic storming. Any time there is injury to the sympathetic nerves in the brain it causes the body to release certain substances that cause fever, tachycardia, hypertension, and agitation. They are using medications to treat all of these things and Makenzie continues to fight hard--I LOVE her FIGHTING SPIRIT! As I have said before, the road is LONG and the recovery will be slow and tedious. We appreciate all that has been done for our family. The outpouring of love for her has been tremendous. Keep the faith everyone!! Tomorrow will bring more hours and many more challenges!!
