I have been thinking a lot about the individuals in Gaston County who identify as transgender or are questioning their gender identification. As rough as it is at times for those who are LGBT here, it has to be even more difficult for these folks. I think in many ways they are the forgotten ones. They are a part of the LGBT community, but do not always feel like they belong or like they are sharing in the strides that gays and lesbians are making. They have a unique perspective, a unique fight for equality and a unique set of challenges. I want those individuals in Gaston County who identify as trans to know how much I care about them, As a gay man I apologize for sometimes moving ahead without demanding that my trans Brother and Sister come along with me. As we begin to see a flood of legal rulings uplift and affirm our community, let us not forget our fight is not over until our transgender friends obtain the same sense of freedom, acceptance and protection under the law. We must not rest until ALL citizens in the LGBT umbrella have equal footing and equal rights. Love and peace to my transgender Brothers and Sisters!
