I have had about all I can take about Paula Deen and her use of the ‘N’ word. She is just ignorant and does not know any better. But ignorance is no excuse. I hate that word and have ever since I first heard it in my early childhood, spoken by my own father. It is a word born in hatred. I am just as offended when it is used by a black person, used in any context it is just wrong. It is a word used to put others in a lower classification. We have many such words in all languages; in fact any word used to describe more than one individual can be used in a negative way. The use of such words, paints a pre-disposed picture of a person; black, white, old, young, Muslim, Jew, homeless, gay, Democrat, Republican, even male and female, when used to describe an individual, is prejudice. These group names in themselves are not bad, in fact many of us take great pride when we use these groups to describe ourselves; however when used in a stereotypical manner to describe someone other than ourselves, they can cause alienation. In many instances this is done out of ignorance. Ignorance breeds fear, and fear breeds hate. Instead of getting to know an individual, we begin to assign attributes to them based on the perceived groups we see them in. Why is it that we are more repulsed when a black youth is killed by a white man, or a black man rapes a young blond white girl, or a bully beats up a kid just because he is gay. Should we not be equally appalled by any murder, rape, or abuse born in hate. There will never be equality as long as we continue to label individuals. Each of us is beautifully unique. Not even identical twins are the same; in fact I believe that if we ever do clone people, the resulting individuals will be unique. We are so much more than the biological machines in which we reside. In a perfect world none of us would judge another, but if we must then at least get to know the individual before forming an opinion. ~ Rich Powell
