I have had the privilege of taking care of all sorts of creatures for friends and family over the years - tiny fish, cats, dogs, rabbits, snakes, spiders, sheep, goats, cattle and horses ... - and I can honestly say that my least favourite creature is the chicken. I just cant warm to all that scratching and clucking and sudden head turning. And dont get me started on their who are you to try and coax me into my safe place so the fox wont eat me attitude, especially when theyre giving it to me as I stand ankle deep in their greasy smelly slippery crap and the rain is dripping down the back of my neck and I know that they know that if I move one muscle to hurry them along they will disperse to all corners of their run in a flurry of feathers and panicky squawks so that I have to calmly and slowly gather them all up again. I quite like eggs though.
