I have just drove from Ashbourne to Ratoath. Every lamp post, fence and hoarding, has a poster of someone trying to make it in the next local elections. Until recently, I have only known a handful of these candidates. Niamh McGowan , I know of her from the last election but amazingly, havent heard of her after her being elected, until now. Please tell me what you have been doing Ms McGown. Deirdre Smith. Never heard of before until recently. What have you ever done Ms Smith. Gillian Toole. Now here is a newbie. But might be a goodie. She is very much involved in the Ratoath musical society so is an active community person. Joe Bonner. To be honest, myself and Joe Bonner have locked horns in the past, but have to give credit where its due. Joe would be a very very active community representative. Nick Killian. Goes without saying, Nick is, without doubt, the most active rep in office at the moment. He has years of experience and is not shy about speaking his mind. John King. Poor john king never seemed to get a seat in the council but its not for the want of trying. Seems a good guy with the community at heart. But as for the rest, who are you. What have you ever done for the community? Remember, local elections are not the same as national elections. They are about getting schools, getting pedestrian crossing, getting planning permissions. They are about electing someone who best represents your area, not someone who is trying to better their own career. Vote ... Vote well.., Vote right.
