I have no opinion on creative writing courses. Ive never been on one. If someone tells me they got a lot out of it, good for them. If someone tells me it was a waste of time, then for them it was. I see no contradiction here. Choose wisely. Ive just read Matt Haigs response to personal jibes and internet criticism in general. I agree with some of his observations about vitriolic tosspots. Perhaps we should compare Kureishis opinion of courses with Žižeks view of people: Humanity is OK, but 99% of people are boring idiots. I have a simple criticism filter. If I usually respect the critics judgment, or find a strangers criticism perceptive, I go away and brood on it. Its stimulus material. If theres anything to be learned, I assimilate it. Egos are for children. If the critic is a self-evident moron, or the criticism is impotent self-loathing redirected, I break my own ego rule. I run the hot tap on someone elses meter. I briefly indulge in a bath of smugness. To have fools for enemies is a worthy artistic achievement. I couldnt give a toss what stupid and unpleasant people think. But I need to know HOW they think so I can use them as material. Writers are full of such complimentary contradictions. Whether we make money out of them is mostly in the hands of fools though :/ discussion.theguardian/comment-permalink/32713733
