I have noticed that some folks who call themselves rescuers get a dog in one day and they are out the next. Those kind of dogs that come in with all their shots, wormed, vet records and fixed are rare to rescue. Many of the dogs that we get need some sort of training and that evaluation takes more than a day and sometimes more than a week. Yes we get very sweet ones in like Max, except for him being obese, he could find a new home soon if folks keep him on his diet with exercise. But most of the dogs can not turn around that quickly even at area shelters so I call those fake rescuers, resellers, There are a lot of icky folks now in rescue thanks to sites like Craigs List where they pose as a rescue and resell dogs they got for free oftentimes in the same city where they got them for free. Those resellers do not screen homes so beware advertising your dogs for free anywhere. Many of the dogs they get while posing as a family are sold to medical labs or dog fighting rings as bait dogs. I am always amazed at the number of scummy folks who are in animals nowadays. I always tell folks if you place your dogs yourself please go and inspect where the dog will be living. Most resellers do not want you to know where they live so they pass on that cheap or free dog. Also if dogs are fixed they will not be used for puppy mill breeding operations so it always helps the dogs if they are spayed or neutered before placement which is exactly why all of ours are fixed and any young dogs we follow up and make darn sure they are fixed when old enough but 99% of the dogs we place are always fixed. No living in tiny cages pumping out pups in our rescue for someones idea of a cheap breeder. I always encourage folks to come here and inspect. Yes we might run into some icky folks too who might come back and haunt us later but for the most part folks can see that we love our animals and know we are a legit rescue. One cant see that they are trusting someone legit if they just deal with someone over the phone or email. So you can find legit rescuers with a bit of research while you ask your local shelter for referrals or use these sites to get started: adoptapet or petfinder
