I have received a couple of emails about why Overall Routine and Choreography is more than Tumbling on the AASCF Cheer score card: Tumble % = 17% Overall Routine % = 20% Don’t ever underestimate how much skill is involved in perfecting the overall Cheer routine and choreography. This is ultimately the hardest element of the entire process and requires an extreme amount of effort, dedication, team work and skill via the athletes to do so. It is so much easier doing the skill sets independently, but putting everything into a routine and perfecting this is really where all of the hard work begins; perfecting the entire routine (overall routine) to perform on the competition floor should be valued and should be strongly recognised on the score card. If this is not the case Cheer routines will end up being a bunch of skills joined together as all teams will try to do is collect skill points rather than execute and amazing routine. Please understand that what AASCF put in place for Australia comes from meetings with the top of our industry, ICU Directors, USASF directors, event producers from around the world, leading coaches from around the World, head judges, endless meetings with these people; they are our resources on going. This is not coming from my own personal opinion. We try very hard to then sit in the middle of the mainstream USA and the rest of the World. It is important to understand that only 0.3% of Australia’s athletes sometimes do competitions in the USA. In regards to AASCF setting the tumbling at 17% – it has been suggested that this will lower the level of quality in our tumbling, this is not correct. A less % of tumbling does not mean less quality of tumbling, but it leaves more % for stunting in the routine. When you look at the scores of teams at most competitions, the difference between 1st and 2nd and 3rd place is often only 0.5 or 1 point, trust me no one wants to do less quality tumbling when it separates them from winning or placing. Teams with bad tumble form get hit hard on the score card by low scoring in execution and then again by the deduction judges. The 17% tumbling on the score card still needs to be level appropriate and well executed. It must be understood that judges world-wide are looking for creativity in tumbling, this is in ongoing discussion. The numbers count of skills verses doing something creative with the skills. Cheerleading is not gymnastics and it is a sport which combines skills with performing arts, as the routines are not judged solely upon the sum of its parts (skills), but on the overall entertainment value of superior technical athleticism combined with creative presentations. World Champion Teams like Cali All Stars and Top Gun are brilliant examples, their quality of tumbling is exquisite, but their tumble choreography/creativity blows your mind. Also, when you look at the USA tumbling score sheets, please realise when you see “overall”, this is no longer about the tumbling, it is the tumble judges only opportunity to have their opinion of the entire routine, so this part does not reflect tumbling but the overall routine and choreography. For the teams really keen to compete in the USA, it won’t take much to lift your tumble score from the AASCF 17% to 25%, and vice versa, the teams competing internationally can pull their tumbling back a little. FYI below is the actual 2014 routine percentage breakdown of the IASF Cheer Worlds. This equals 8.4% for tumbling and jumps. 17% tumbling on our AASCF score card is not so bad. And the below score card is made by the USASF, who are the leaders in the industry of the sport of Cheerleading. 2014 International Divisions Percentage Page Exec. Diff. Exec/Diff Subtotal Possible 300 Standing Tumbling 1.7% Running Tumbling 1.7% Synchronized Tumbling 3.3% Jumps 1.7% Overall 1.7% Tumbling Score Sheet 10.0% Stunts 23.3% Pyramids 23.3% Tosses 15.0% Overall 3.3% Building Score Sheet 65.0% Dance 3.3% Motions 1.7% Formations 3.3% Transitions 3.3% Stunt Creativity 5.0% Pyramid Creativity 5.0% Overall 3.3% Choreography Score Sheet 25.0% We feel it important to stress that AASCF takes its role in the assistance of developing our sport of cheer in Australia very seriously and take into consideration all aspects when formulating scorecards, etc. It is imperative that the sport is allowed to progress safely for the good of all stakeholders– athletes, coaches, gym owners and parents and this is always paramount in our direction.
