I have said long ago, peacekeepers should withdraw, and go somewhere else. They are deliberately targeted, and have zero value to the situation. That Al-Shabab notion, is not what its described to the public. I dont buy the false narrative. Who are they, as individuals, why dont they attempt to destabilize every region of Somalia, including Puntland. How did they manage to be unified under single command structure, when the clan system is still alive. Which of course, yielded, several regional administrations. What is appealing about joining the group, is it lack of alternative options. Are they really religious or could they be identified, as another political group, competing for power. Do they have a meaningful cause, when almost everybody is Muslim, and there is no foreign occupation. Very tough questions. I think, those people are just part of the ruling group, with specialized task. The grand aim is to maximize foreign aid inflow, and attention. Although, the distribution of it, will be unequal. In such case, it will be short lived victory. There is a precedence on revolution, remember the situation of 1991.It took 31 years to mature. Somaliland survives mainly on remittance from abroad, along with sizable NGO projects. They export nothing other than livestock. Therefore, they dont have to play act, as much as Somalia. I doubt, if they will ever consider, such degrading strategies. Adopting, the proper legitimate road, must be so hard.
