I have so far refrained from quizzing my mother - a pensioner and a rabid Abbott supporter - about her response to the budget. But Warren Trusss comments are galling. My parents have never been on a cruise. The only time theyve been outside Australia was to visit their young grandchildren when my sister and I were both living overseas in the mid-90s. They used to drive to Townsville in their 4-cylinder hatchback and stay in a very basic rental apartment on Magnetic Island to escape the Melbourne winter (Dads had both hips replaced and suffers in the cold). They sold our holiday shack at Aireys Inlet because it was affecting their ability to earn the pension, even though it was making no money - they let friends of the family stay there for free. They have paid private health insurance all their working lives but still depend on public healthcare for management of Dads heart failure. Im not saying they are doing it tough - theyre OK. But I feel like kicking Warren Truss in the balls.
