I have to admit I have not seen this in a very long time but I have vivid memories of doing my marketing in a Long Island supermarket several years ago and frequently running into people piling expensive foods, such as good cuts of meat, onto the conveyor belt and covering them with food stamps. And then producing another pile containing beer and cigarettes and paying cash for them. It has always made me a little suspicious of the benefit of food stamps. But I havent seen this occur in a number of years. Either Im shopping in more upscale neighborhoods or else there are curbs put on stamp qualifications....or people who use them are smarter. Or times have become much tougher. Does anyone have a view on this?
