I have tried many to times to share the impact Rene has had on my life, only to become too emotional to express my feelings as I struggled to understand how the few moments I spent with René could have such an impact on my life. When I heard him sing during the “Friends With You” concert in Aspen there was something in his voice and the words of his songs that spoke directly to my heart and left tears in my eyes. I was taping performances in Aspen for a collection of songs to honor John Denver. The lights had gone and René preformed his songs by flash light. Two of his songs seemed to capture and express the emotions I was trying to convey in the tribute to John Denver. I asked Judy Therrien, one of concert the host if she could have René perform two of his songs when lights came back on song so I could tape them, as a possible tribute to John Denver. After the lights came on René said he was going to play some of John’s, the guy behind the big camera over wants me to repeat two of my song so he can tape them, so here goes. After the show I was nervous as I approached René. With a worm smile on his face he asked did you get the video you wanted and he stuck out his hand. The hand shake was as worm as his smile I will never forget how he immediately made me feel at ease. When I ask him if I could us “From Afar” as a tribute to John Denver, with that worm smile of his he said yes that would be OK but there is a problem with the words as the words “You will always be my Daddy”, René agreed to work with me to make the song into a tribute to John. We communicated over the internet for several months René ageing to send me a tape to change “my Daddy” to “my Friend” and “Your arms around me” to “your music around me”. In the final cut only Daddy was changed to friend. We continued to communicate over the internet, with René sending me a copy of each of his new CD’s as they came out. Rene’s performance he graciously worked with me to create as a tribute to John Denver, I now offer special tribute to René who touched my spirit will always live in my heart.
