I heard it on NPR today during a discussion about some sort of cranberry dressing with horseradish, but the first day of Hanuka coincides with Thanksgiving this year. . . and it wont happen again for 70,000 years! Well, I normally dont have call to celebrate Hanuka, but it is always good to get in on something that you wont get a chance to take part in again for 70,000 years. I mean, if they say that you wont see another solar eclipse for 10 years or a comet bright enough to be seen by the naked eye for another 30 years, well, you might chance that. But 70,000?! That is a lot of years. I mean how many greats would our descendants have to put before the word grandfather or grandmother or auntie or uncle when describing the last of their relatives to experience such a coincidental cusping of holidays?! I mean they might be adding greats until the next occurrence were to come to pass. And then, getting into the neurotic end of Woody Allen territory a bit, but one has to wonder if we human types will even still be around in 70,000 years. If we are, what will that life be like? I mean will it be some sort of utopia that weve achieved where we all speak Greek with Brooklyn accents and dine on fine fruits yet to be realized while listening to really cool 70,021st century shoegaze music or will it be a Solyent Green is people kind of world with the Doobie Brothers playing in the background? Yikes. Dont want to think about that. I mean, after all, trying to figure out stuff like that is like trying to wrap ones head around the concept of infinity, or, worse yet, trying to figure out what would be the alternative to infinity. Man, no wonder people dont like to think. It is dangerous for you mind! Well, ok, back to Hanuka/Thanksgiving. Hope you all enjoy this unique coincidence of holidays.
