I hesitate to solicit my friends for donations but I trust you will indulge me this one time. Young Nicholas, who you all know from my occasional posts, is becoming quite an avid youth sailor. He moved up from the little Optimist dingy to a much faster Laser this summer. He will sail in a fundraiser regatta, the Leukemia Cup, September 14th at the Savannah Yacht Club for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. There are so many good causes in the world but he chooses this one because at age 5 he lost his grandfather to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Bill Nelson was a picture of perfect health is every other way but this awful disease called cancer separated a young boy from his grandfather much too soon. From Mr. Bill’s lap a very young Nicholas learned life experiences from World War II and exciting tales of a big fish that got away. But with less than a month “warning” Bill passed away in our home. Now Nicholas has chosen to honor his grandfather through the sport of sailing to raise money for cancer research. Please, if you will, take a moment to read his short story and if you would like to give a few dollars you can be sure it will encourage a young kid to know he is helping to make a difference in the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma.
