I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Hopefully you got outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. By the way, I had a great week off . . . thanks for asking. :) Here’s our weekend recap: 10/27/2013—South Weber was hit with a couple of vehicle burglaries—both in the area of 8100 South. The first vehicle had loose change and canned food stolen. The second vehicle was missing an IPad and IPod. Both vehicles left had been left unlocked to become crimes of opportunity. Both were discovered on the morning of Saturday the 27th. Canned food? There are so many ways to go with this . . . But I’ll just stick with; please lock your vehicle doors. Deputies assisted with Red Ribbon Week during the past couple of weeks. For those of you who don’t know, Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country and is run through the schools. The Sheriff’s K9’s performed numerous demonstrations in the schools, promoting education and drug-free lives. It’s a great campaign and our deputies love getting to know your kids. Keep up the good work, parents! 10/27/2013—A Fruit Heights woman received a phone call on her cell phone from a male who sounded very professional. He called her by name and said that her parents (who live out of state) had been involved in a car accident. He said they crashed into his brother, who is a member of the Mexican Drug Cartel. He gave the woman a description of her parent’s car and said his brother had taken her parents hostage. He then demanded all of her money in exchange for her parents’ safe return. The male told her if she didn’t do exactly as he said, his brother would kill her parents. He manipulated her every move, including ensuring that she didn’t use any other phone and staying on the phone with her as she went to her bank to get money to wire to him. As she was driving to the bank, she was able to put him on speaker phone and told him she didn’t want to get pulled over for talking on the phone while driving. He agreed, no police. During this time, she was able to text a friend who lives next to her parents, asking her to check on her parents and make sure they were alright. As she was at the teller’s window withdrawing her money (while the suspect was still on the phone with her), she received a text from her friend confirming that her parents were home and were fine. She gave the suspect a fake transaction number and finished the phone call. Just when you think the scammers couldn’t get any lower, you take a call like this one. Take note people, scammers are getting more and more brazen and in this case, threatening. Somehow, he had gotten some personal information of the victim and her family. She was noticeably frightened when the deputy took the report. The scammer called her back once more and she told him she knew it was a scam and hung up. We want you all to stay on top of the new tactics they are taking so you can be prepared and protect yourselves and your families. 0 DUI’s—That’s a perfect score!
