I hope my dear friend Mary Boisselle Duffy doesnt mind if I use a comment she made recently as my Sabbath post. It was beautiful and Ive been giving it thought and I wanted to share it. Picture two dogs in a fight- same breed, same age. Which one will win? The one that gets FED will win, of course. Imagine that one of the dogs is your soul (your mind, will and emotions- what you think, want and feel) the other is your spirit man that communes with God. Feed your soul constantly and your spirit man gets too weak to be of any earthly good. Imagine a life that is all soul-ish desires and no spirit- (Just look at a two year old in a tantrum!) Enter fasting. It’s not following religious rules, it’s a re-focusing time to get your soul in control and yielded to your spirit so you can be who you were created to be. I fast whenever God shows me when things in my life are upstaging my relationship with Him. Ive fasted from the computer, and from busy-ness; even from meals for an extended period when my soul is not yielded to my spirit and I have trouble hearing God’s voice. There is nothing magical about fasting, but when I replace times of doing those other things with time with God (worship, prayer, scriptures), and with serving others (instead of myself), my spirit gets strong and I can hear from God more clearly. If you decide to try fasting from something, my dear friend, let it be from something God shows you that you turn to for comfort instead of Him. I often have to tell my flesh to take a flying leap and YIELD during the first few days of my fasting times. The harder the struggle, the more clearly I can see just how strong my “flesh” has been. Fasting is where I go from saying I love and want God more than anything to actually showing Him that I do!
