I invite you think about this with me ... what counts as “academic language” is an utterly social phenomenon, as Scribner and Cole’s (1981) study of the Vai in Liberia illustrates. They found that literacies in different languages (Vai, Arabic, and English) within the same community were associated with different cognitive skills, and neither Vai nor Arabic literacy predicted performance on tasks we usually associate with schooling in this country. Because the Vai used different languages to accomplish different things (letter writing, reading religious texts, etc.), their CALP in one language did not neatly map onto CALP in another. https://openarchive.stanford.edu/sites/default/files/AukermanCulpableCALP.pdf
