I just finished the challenge strong with one of the more embarrassing omissions on my list - WEST SIDE STORY. Of course I have seen a good part of it, usually individual songs and such, but never the complete film. After making the dreadfully bland and boring STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Robert Wise regrouped and made this cracking good musical retelling of Romeo and Juliet. It is an explosion of color and energy. As I was watching, I kept asking myself if THIS wasnt the great Great American Movie. Sure, there was lots of amazing dancing and singing, but the characters are telling the story of transcending their immigrant differences to become fellow Americans. Not serious enough? Dont kid yourself. This is still the bards most famous tragedy and I found it surprisingly affecting. Its one song too long for me, but this should not be missed. I also caught A GENTLEMANS AGREEMENT today. I thought Daves review was spot on and I dont have much to add. I really enjoyed it. However, between these two films, I have heard every racial and ethnic epithet in existence today.
