I just got sucker-punched by the news that my old friend Paul Hernandez passed away on Sunday. Those of my friends who don’t recognize the name, he wrote the movie “Sky High” and had his hands in a LOT of other projects. Paul was (I can’t even believe I have to refer to him in the past-tense) a monster Superman fan, and we would literally spend HOURS talking about Superman and his various incarnations. I fondly remember the crackling conversation about the 1940s era Superman movie he wanted to make. We talked about our kids, props and costumes and movies and TV and just life in general. He was a very passionate storyteller and always entertained me with his adventures, ranging from his meeting with Stephen J. Cannell and trying to hammer out a new “Greatest American Hero,” sneaking onto the “Lois & Clark” set at Warner Bros., seeing Clark’s starship and desperately wanting to take it home, or just that his daughter rolled over in her sleep and just randomly said “French Fries.” Over the past few months, he kept saying that as soon as he got the all-clear we were going to get together, catch up and “wrap our teeth around a couple of steaks.” We talked a lot over the phone and on FB, but the last time I saw him was when he and Terry Rossio came over to Abacus where I got to reconnect both of them from some props and wardrobe from some of their projects. Terry got one of the prop wood planks hidden in the Resolute Desk in “National Treasure 2” and Paul got some of the hero capes from “Sky High.” I am glad I was able to call Paul a friend. I love the memories and I’m so saddened that there’s not going to be any new ones. My deepest, heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Paul Hernandez was a truly unique person. Rest in peace, buddy…
