I just learned yesterday from his longtime companion that JOHN WAYNE CYRA checked out last month in a sad year for we survivors. Leah Melendy wroteI: “Oh dear! Was hoping that Gene [Davis] Descalzi told everyone in Hawaii. I am afraid I have some very bad news. John shot himself on Dec 9th. He left a note saying that he didnt want to burden me with his health problems. He was in a lot of pain but I never thought he would do this! We were together 14 years and it was a devastating loss. Im so sorry to have to tell you. I wanted to get a hold of his old girlfriend Judy [“Keala Kai”] but so far no luck.” I met Big John in 1976 when he dragged Keala to Likelike Drive-In to persuade her to leave her secretary/announcer job at KIKI to join me as Whodaguy debuted on KKUA on July 5, 2015. She was the best, NEVER stepped on each other. She, a Kamehameha grad, turned me onto all the new Hawaiian music I missed in my 12 years in Haolewood. Cyra did voices for my morning show and other stuff. We roomed together in North Hollywood in 1994. We were working on a screen play together and making lots of trouble. His younger brother is very cool. John took me on many trips to his favorite place: the dump! He was a bigtime scrounger. He moved to my place in Makawao, Piiholo Road (above), and became caretaker for a while. Oh, the times we spent, Johnny Boy :) Anyone have pics of Cyra at KIKI in 1970s? (Below: John in March 2014. And me in the old, original crashdown KKUA studio where John visited to do characters, which he portrayed with big humor. And one of his meals served to me!
